JLTANE

What is JLTANE? 

JLTANE stands for the Japanese Language Teachers' Association of the Northeast Region of the United States. Founded in 1986 from a workshop hosted by the late Professor Tatsuko Ashida Monane at Harvard University, JLTANE is a professional network dedicated to supporting Japanese language educators at all levels—from K–16 to supplementary schools—throughout the Northeastern U.S.

Our Mission 

We aim to strengthen regional collaboration and advance Japanese language education by empowering educators to exchange ideas, present research, and refine teaching skills. Key focus areas include:

  • Pedagogy & Research: Sharing insights in language instruction, linguistics, applied linguistics, and classroom practice.

  • Modern Innovation: Exploring cutting-edge teaching methodologies, curriculum design, AI technology, and strategies for learner diversity.

  • Community Building: Fostering connections across regions, working alongside partners like the NECTJ.

Annual Conference 

A cornerstone of our association is our annual conference, hosted sequentially by prominent institutions across the Northeast—resuming online post-pandemic at Smith College (2021) and in person at Yale University (2025). The event draws domestic and international education professionals to discuss the evolving landscape of Japanese language teaching. Featuring keynote lectures and research presentations on cutting-edge teaching methodologies, curriculum development, AI technology, and learner diversity, the conference attracts K–16 teachers, Japanese supplementary school educators, and academic professionals both nationally and internationally. 

Upcoming Event 

Our 2027 in-person annual conference will take place at Amherst College (Amherst, MA). Event dates, keynote speakers, and abstract submission details will be announced this fall. We look forward to seeing you there!
