NECTJ Bunkasai is an annual celebration where students can immerse themselves in authentic Japanese language and culture through hands-on activities, performances, and meaningful interactions in Japanese. Whether participants are just beginning their Japanese language journey or have studied for years, Bunkasai offers a unique opportunity to use Japanese in a lively, welcoming, and real-world environment.
The event began in 1994 as NECTJ Harumatsuri (Spring Festival), organized by the Northeast Council of Teachers of Japanese (NECTJ). For many years, it was held at the United Nations International School (UNIS) in New York City, becoming a beloved tradition for Japanese language learners across the region.In 2025, the festival entered an exciting new chapter by moving to Hunter College, CUNY, where the 30th anniversary was celebrated as "The 30th NECTJ Bunkasai @ Hunter College." Building on that success, the 2026 festival expanded its partnership with the addition of Japan Society, and was presented as "NECTJ Bunkasai in Partnership with Hunter College and Japan Society." These collaborations reflect our shared commitment to promoting Japanese language education and cultural exchange throughout the Northeast.
Each year, more than 300 students studying Japanese and 100 dedicated volunteers come together to create an unforgettable experience. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of activities, including: Japan trivia quiz show, interactive cultural experience booths, fun contests and competitions, student talent show, and opportunities to meet fellow Japanese learners and practice Japanese in authentic communication
More than just a festival, NECTJ Bunkasai is a place where students build friendships, gain confidence in using Japanese, and discover the richness of Japanese culture through shared experiences.
